Description:
With the transition from AAMI TIR34 to the comprehensive ANSI/AAMI ST108 standard, healthcare facilities face stricter requirements for water quality, generation, and distribution. ANSI/AAMI ST108 introduces new guidance on water quality for medical device processing with significant impacts on the design, infrastructure, and operational strategies of Sterile Processing Departments (SPD).
ST108 elevates water quality to a critical component in design consideration, requiring greater coordination between infection prevention, facilities, and engineering design teams. This session will explore the practical design implications of ST108 for healthcare engineers, architects, and facilities staff. Attendees will gain a working understanding of how water quality classifications, treatment systems, monitoring requirements, and risk management strategies affect infrastructure planning, equipment selection, redundancy, space allocation, and long-term maintenance.
This session explains the critical engineering components within ST108, moving beyond basic water chemistry to the physical infrastructure required to support it. We will explore the three categories of water quality (Utility, Critical, and Steam) and the specific design strategies required for each. Attendees will gain an understanding of coordination challenges, design-related recommendations for building infrastructure systems, and operational impacts, as well as considerations for enforcement from Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
Learning Objectives:
- Review key differences between the legacy TIR34 guidelines and the current ST108 standard.
- Describe the primary water quality classifications defined in ST108 and their relevance to sterile processing.
- Identify key infrastructure and spatial design implications resulting from ST108implementation.
- Establish best practices for system design to facilitate monitoring and maintenance to comply with ST108 testing requirements without operational impacts to the SPD.
