San Luis Valley Health Maintenance Mechanic

San Luis Valley Health is seeking a full time Maintenance Mechanic. The Maintenance Mechanic operates and maintains HVAC and steam plant. Performs a wide variety of maintenance, repair and installation including, plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical, heating and refrigeration. The Maintenance Mechanic position requires a working knowledge and journey-level skills in at least one of the trades of electrical, plumbing or HVAC. The Maintenance Mechanic reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and Facilities Director. Supervision could include supervision of personnel when supervisor is not present.

  • Education and qualifications required are:
  • High School graduate or vocational/technical school with courses and certification/license in mechanics, electrical, or building trades.
  • Minimum 2 years building systems experience.
  • Acceptable driving record allowing individual to be insured.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of electricity/electronics, plumbing, boiler, air conditioning, and general building maintenance.
  • Individuals assigned to this position must maintain the appropriate certification, licensure or registration as mandated by the specific governing agency.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Electrical Systems- Performs maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical systems and controls such as receptacles, cords, circuits, light fixtures; perform electrical circuit installations; Assure all circuits are in conformance with state and NEC. Inspect and perform safety tests on electrical circuits and HVAC systems; isolate defects and repair them, such as faulty controls, motors and wiring systems, and equipment.
  • Plumbing- Repair or replace defective piping or fixtures; open clogged drains; thaw frozen pipes; repair and overhaul pumps & heat exchangers.
  • Operates steam plant and repairs/replaces steam traps, steam leaks, sight glasses, etc.
  • HVAC-Monitor HVAC systems through the building automation system; inspect and operate heating systems, refrigerating machinery, cooler, and freezer units; maintain and repair these systems.

Operates and maintains the physical facilities, equipment, systems and utilities as assigned.


  • Operates and maintains equipment, facilities and systems as needed and/or as assigned to ensure a safe environment of care.
  • Accurately records and reports work performed.
  • Adheres to trade practices and codes. Accesses roof areas, basements, equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces and other minimally accessible areas on a regular basis.
  • Responds to facility emergencies to ensure minimal disruption to patient care and to minimize facility damage.
  • May include emergency duties such as fire control or flooding.
  • Performs general industrial maintenance including installation of appropriate equipment and devices to ensure proper operation, some being specific to the healthcare environment.
  • Maintenance can include service and/or repair work on plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, motors, pumps, electrical systems, pneumatic tube systems, lighting, flooring, window coverings, walls and other systems.
  • Obtains and delivers supplies and materials.
  • Performs custodial services in facilities areas on a daily basis.
  • Performs snow removal as needed. Assists with moving equipment.

Minimum Required Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • 1 year experience in related field.
